Athletics directors

Charles Guthrie was named director of athletics at Green Bay. Guthrie, an athletics administrator with over 15 years in collegiate athletics, has spent the past three years as the director of athletics at San Francisco State … Trinity (Connecticut) appointed Drew Galbraith as director of athletics and chair of physical education. Galbraith currently serves at Dartmouth as senior associate director of athletics and executive director of Dartmouth Peak Performance, a program that integrates services and resources to help student-athletes achieve excellence … Carla Williams was named director of athletics at Virginia. Williams has been an athletics administrator at Georgia for the past 13 years, most recently serving as deputy director of athletics since 2015.

Associate athletics directors

Southern Vermont women’s basketball coach Christin Gowan will serve as associate director of athletics in addition to her coaching duties. Gowan was hired as coach in March.



Thomas More head coach Regis Scafe announced he is retiring at the end of the season. Trevor Stellman, who is in his eighth season at Thomas More and sixth as offensive coordinator, was named to fill his position. Scafe is in his third season as the head coach at Thomas More. He previously was head coach at John Carroll for 14 seasons and at his alma mater, Case Western Reserve, for five seasons.

Football assistants

Chris Norwell was promoted to associate head football coach at Thomas More.

Men’s and women’s soccer

Dan Kuntz is retiring as head men’s coach at Cal Lutheran. He will remain in his role as athletics director. Kuntz has spent the past 25 years as head coach of the men’s team. He also coached the women’s team for 12 years from 1993 to 2004 … Mary Baldwin hired Robert Rose as soccer program coordinator and head men’s coach. Rose previously coached youth leagues.


Montana announced that Melanie Meuchel, an assistant for the Grizzlies since the program’s inception in 2013, has been named its next head coach, pending approval by the school’s board of regents.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball

Mount Union hired Matt Mihelic as head coach of its new men’s team. Mihelic spent the past two years as the boys program director for the Ohio Valley Region of USA Volleyball. The Mount Union men’s team will begin competition in the spring of 2019.

Athletics directors

After 16 years as athletics director at Muskingum, Larry Shank will retire at the end of the academic year. Shank has spent more than 40 years in intercollegiate athletics … John Johnson, senior associate director of athletics at Washington State, will serve as the school’s interim director of athletics as a national search gets underway for a full-time A.D. Johnson replaces Bill Moos, who had served as Washington State’s athletics director since 2010, after Moos was named athletics director at Nebraska … North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison  announced he will retire at the end of 2017. Faison will serve as a special advisor to North Dakota athletics from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2018.

Associate athletics directors

Kansas State announced new positions for Jeremy Niederwerder, who has been promoted to senior associate athletics director for facilities and capital projects, and Charlie Thomas, who is the new senior associate athletics director for special projects.

Assistant athletics directors

Rob Heil, a graduate of Kansas State, is returning to his alma mater as the assistant athletics director for development after spending the past 11 years in positions at Texas. Also, Kansas State graduate and former women’s basketball player Kristin Waller has been elevated to assistant athletics director of student-athlete services.


Women’s basketball

Amy Senefelder was named head coach at Hilbert. Senefelder most recently served as head coach of Mercyhurst University North East, a junior college in Pennsylvania.


Holy Cross announced that Tom Gilmore was relieved of his duties as head coach. Gilmore served as head coach of the Crusaders for 14 seasons with an overall record of 72-81. Offensive coordinator Brian Rock will assume the interim head coach role for the remainder of the 2017 season.

Men’s and women’s golf

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley named former PGA professional Brian Novoa as its women’s head coach. Novoa served as a head instructor at Scoring Solutions Golf for the past nine years.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse

Kean hired Barbara "B.J." Johnson as head coach of its women’s program. Johnson was a volunteer assistant coach for the past four seasons for the Rutgers women’s team. Previously, she was head coach of Mount St. Mary’s for four seasons … Abigail Rehfuss was named head coach of the Siena women's team. Rehfuss joined the Saints after serving two years as the varsity head coach at Shaker High School in Latham, New York.

Men’s and women’s skiing

New England College hired Robert Millard as head coach of its alpine skiing program. Millard, a 2014 New England College graduate, coached the team in an interim capacity last season.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving

Jamie Hotaling is returning to Cobleskill State as director of aquatics/head men’s and women’s coach. Hotaling previously coached the Fighting Tigers on a part-time basis from 2008 through 2011.


Jason McLean, a 2001 graduate of Muhlenberg who earned All-America honors as a senior, was named head coach of his alma mater. Since 2003, McLean has worked for the New Brunswick (New Jersey) School District, serving as head wrestling coach, assistant football coach, assistant track and field coach, and assistant athletics director.


David Shankles, 19, a Berry sophomore cross country and track runner, died suddenly Oct. 10. Shankles, who was on the Southern Athletic Association academic honor roll during his freshman year in both cross country and track, placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and sixth in the 4x400-meter relay at the SAA championships.

Presidents and chancellors

Elon selected Constance “Connie” Ledoux Book as its next president. Book, currently provost of The Citadel, is a former Elon faculty member and administrative leader. She will assume her new post March 1.

Associate athletics directors

Eastern Michigan named Andy Rowdon as senior associate athletics director for external affairs. Rowdon spent the past three years as assistant athletics director of promotions and fan engagement at Texas Tech … Karen Freed was selected as Delaware’s associate director of athletics for recreation services. Freed spent the past four years as assistant director of athletics and recreation services and senior women administrator at Rutgers-Camden … Hofstra made the following senior staff promotions: Jay Artinian to deputy director of athletics, Cindy Lewis to senior associate director of athletics (senior woman administrator and business affairs), Chrissy Arnone to associate director of athletics for fan engagement, and Rachel August to associate director of athletics for finance and administration.

Assistant athletics directors

Hofstra promoted Ryan Watson to assistant director of athletics for facilities and events and Rachelle Fabre to assistant director of athletics for student-athlete services and life skills development.


Baseball assistants

Hofstra appointed Brandon Stein as a volunteer assistant coach.


Oregon State and head coach Gary Andersen mutually have agreed to part ways, effective immediately. Andersen held the position for nearly three years. In the interim, Oregon State assistant coach Cory Hall will lead the program. Hall joined Oregon State in January 2016.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving

Massachusetts added Joshua Arndt and Sean Clark to the coaching staff. Arndt will serve as diving coach for both the men’s and women’s teams, while Clark will serve as assistant coach with the men’s squad.

Men’s and women’s tennis assistants

Hofstra appointed Dylan Roberts to the position of volunteer assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs.

Men’s and women’s volleyball

Julie Redus resigned as head coach of the women’s team at Mississippi College. Graduate assistant Holly Tupper will serve as interim head coach. Redus began her coaching career at Mississippi College as an assistant in 2015. She was appointed the interim head coach for the 2016 campaign before becoming head coach for the 2017 season.
