“This important milestone for the most-played football rivalry in the country will be celebrated at our nation’s most iconic sports facility. Our fans deserve nothing less,
and our student-athletes will remember this day for the rest of their lives.”

– Daniel Weiss, former president, Lafayette College

“This historic event will allow Lehigh and Lafayette to celebrate each institution’s quality faculty and staff, the successful alumni and the exceptional students on each campus, in addition to the student-athletes that will participate in the 150th game.”

– Alice P. Gast, former president, Lehigh University

When Lafayette College and Lehigh University meet on the football field, the game is simply known as “The Rivalry.” It is the most-played rivalry in the history of college football, and this year’s game will mark only the second time — and the first in more than a century — that the two teams will meet on a neutral field. The other occurred Nov. 25, 1891, when Lafayette and Lehigh met in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The two Patriot League rivals, with campuses about 20 minutes apart, first met on the football field in 1884. In the early years of the rivalry, the teams met twice a season on the gridiron, with the exception of 1891 when they met three times. In 130 years, the only season the two schools did not meet was in 1896, when Lehigh was disputing the eligibility of a Lafayette player and refused to play the team.

Lafayette leads the all-time series 77-67-5, which includes last year’s 50-28 victory that snapped Lehigh’s five-game winning streak in the rivalry. The all-time score between the two storied rivals shows Lafayette leading 2,643-2,195.
