Breathing Uneasy

Though Maddy Conklin can run six miles during a field hockey game, the Cornell midfielder’s biggest challenge is staying a step ahead of cystic fibrosis. Twice a day, a vibrating vest helps clear her lungs, and a nebulizer delivers respiratory medicine. An inhaler provides protection at gametime. Conklin, a biology and society major who will be a sophomore, was diagnosed with the life-threatening disease at age 6. “My big message is to show people that even if there is an obstacle that you can overcome it,” Conklin says. “If you are passionate about something, you can pursue it and don’t let anything stop you.”
