The Middle School Madness program was initiated at the 1999 Women's Final Four®. As was its goal then, the Middle School Madness program provides a link between classroom learning and two of the NCAA's profile events, the Men's and Women's Final Fours. This season, the contest will include Division I men's and women's host cities. Select schools within both host cities are encouraged to participate in one of the two program components that benefit the community and leave a lasting legacy.
One component provides participating middle school teachers with curriculum books complete with lesson plans in language arts, math, social studies, physical education and health, art and science. Included within the lesson plans are basketball trivia and good sportsmanship exercises that make teaching and learning fun.
Another component of the Middle School Madness program provides middle school students with the opportunity to enter an essay or poster contest that addresses a sportsmanship topic. All students in selected schools who enter are eligible to receive NCAA prizes. The four overall grand prize winners win tickets to the Final Four®, Hoop City® and the Final Four Salute events in addition to receiving basketball equipment provided by the NCAA for their home and schools.
The NCAA commends administrators, teachers and students everywhere and is proud to provide the Middle School Madness program to Boston and Indianapolis in 2006.
