Division II Research

With over 300 member institutions Division II is athletic home of over 100,000 student-athletes.  NCAA Research is committed to understanding the student-athlete experience of all of its members.  The pages below demonstrate that commitment and provide insight into Division II, its member institutions, and their student-athletes.

Division II Census

The second Division II Membership Census was conducted in 2018 to gather information about the operations of Division II athletics departments and solicit feedback from chancellors and presidents, athletics administrators, coaches, faculty and conference staff about a broad range of topical issues impacting the future of the division. Those topics included Division II branding and positioning, national championships, student-athlete advisory committees, divisional governance processes and structure, diversity and inclusion, and conference and presidential involvement in institutional athletics programs. The results will inform committee discussions and help the Division II governance structure conduct a midterm assessment of the 2015-21 strategic plan and begin shaping its successor.

Division II Diploma Dashboard

The NCAA’s interactive Division II Diploma Dashboard allows student-athletes, parents, researchers, media and athletics administrators to compare undergraduate degrees earned by student-athletes with those conferred on the general student body at Division II colleges and universities. The dashboard allows users to dissect data to compare contingents of student-athletes based on year of graduation, gender, race and, in some cases, sport. The data include student-athletes who compete in all sports, but information on graduates from a particular sport is currently available for just four: baseball, football, and men’s and women’s basketball.

Division II Academic Success Rate (ASR)

The Division II Academic Success Rate (ASR) tracks graduation of Division II student-athletes. The ASR includes transfers into an institution in the calculation of the rate, but removes from the cohort students who left the institution while academically eligible to compete. The ASR also includes all non-scholarship freshman student-athletes on the roster on the first date of competition.

Division II SCORE Study (Study of College Outcomes and Recent Experiences)

Former Division II student-athletes were surveyed approximately ten years post-graduation to explore their experiences after they finished their collegiate careers.  Data from 5,400 participants who were college freshmen in 1999 or 2000 suggest that Division II student-athletes are very satisfied with their experience at these schools.
