Athletics directors − Scott Corley, a 1990 Belmont graduate and senior vice president of corporate banking at FirstBank, has been named director of athletics at Belmont … Leon Costello, current deputy director of athletics at South Dakota State, has been named Montana State’s athletics director … Cindy Masner was named interim athletics director at Long Beach State. Masner has spent more than 30 years working for the athletics department … Brad Duckworth has been named director of athletics at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Duckworth has served as athletics director and head women's basketball coach at Alverno since 2007 and as golf coach the past three years … Wisconsin-River Falls has named Crystal Lanning interim athletics director, a position she will fill for the next two years. Lanning takes over the role from Roger Ternes, who resigned … Academy of Art appointed Ben Jay as director of athletics. Jay, who brings more than 25 years of collegiate athletics experience, was most recently director of athletics at Hawaii … Centenary (Louisiana) has named Robert Bunnell director of athletics and wellness. Bunnell has more than 30 years of experience in athletics, including 20 years as an athletics director … Johns Hopkins appointed Alanna Shanahan as director of athletics and recreation. Shanahan has served as the deputy director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Pennsylvania since 2012 … Wayne State (Michigan) hired Sam Olson as assistant athletics director for compliance and NCAA liaison. He spent the past two years at Eastern Michigan as the assistant compliance director/monitoring.

Associate athletics directors Iowa State promoted Patrice Feulner to senior associate athletics director for student services. Feulner began at Iowa State in 2014 as an assistant athletics director for student-athlete development … West Virginia hired Steve Uryasz as executive senior associate athletics director. Uryasz has 29 years of athletics administration experience, with previous stops at Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Nebraska … Manhattan promoted Douglas Straley to associate athletics director for sports medicine and athletic performance. Straley, who is in his 13th year at Manhattan, most recently worked as assistant athletics director for sports medicine … Virginia Tech promoted Desiree Reed-Francois to deputy athletics director. She has served as executive associate athletics director and senior woman administrator the past two years … Hawaii Hilo promoted Kula Oda to associate athletics director. Oda leaves his post as division of student affairs budget manager/fiscal officer.

Assistant athletics directors − Southern Vermont named Ashley Hodges assistant director of athletics. Hodges has been the head athletic trainer for Southern Vermont athletics since fall 2009 … Ed Beach was named assistant athletics director-media relations/marketing at his alma mater, Drury. Beach had worked at Evangel University in Missouri since 2002 … Dawn Anselmin will switch roles from Mercy’s assistant athletics director for compliance to assistant athletics director of operations. She will remain in her roles as women’s lacrosse head coach and senior woman administrator. First-year head men’s soccer coach Pedro Velazquez will take on the additional role of assistant athletics director for compliance … Drury has named Ed Beach its assistant athletics director-media relations/marketing. Beach has worked as director of communications for Evangel University athletics in Missouri since 2002 … Staten Island named Alberto Sanchez as its new assistant athletics director/finance and business manager. Sanchez, a longtime Brooklyn College staffer, has been serving as a senior accountant in its comptroller’s office.

Coaches

Baseball − St. Mary’s (Maryland) hired Bernard “Bernie” Stratchko as head coach of the Seahawks program. Stratchko has spent the past five years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Frostburg State.

Men’s basketball − Concord head coach Kent McBride was announced as head coach at California (Pennsylvania). McBride posted an 83-63 record in five seasons at Concord.

Men’s basketball assistants − Hofstra added Lamar Barrett to the position of assistant coach. Barrett replaces Akbar Waheed, who departed in May to accept an assistant coaching position at Georgetown.

Women’s basketball − Salem International named Michael Bari head coach. Bari most recently spent two years as head coach at nearby West Virginia Wesleyan … Columbus State introduced Anita Howard as head coach. Howard led Livingstone to a 41-14 record in two seasons as head coach.

Basketball assistants − Hofstra named Dianna Thomas-Palmer director of women’s basketball operations.

Men’s and women’s cross country − Georgia Southwestern hired Paula McDonald as head coach of the women’s program. McDonald had served as the head boys and girls cross country coach at Southland Academy in Americus, Georgia, since 2010.

Field hockey − Jessica Seay was hired as the head coach at St. Mary’s (Maryland). Seay, who played for Salisbury as a student-athlete, stayed on as a graduate assistant coach for two years. She takes over for Katie Newkirk, who after eight seasons at the helm of the Seahawks program, is stepping down to pursue a teaching career.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse − Wingate appointed Tim Boyle as head men’s coach. The three-time U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association National Coach of the Year spent 16 seasons at Dowling, where he tallied 148 wins and led the team to a 2012 national title.

Men’s and women’s soccer − Dan Montanye has been named head men’s coach at Olivet. Montanye spent the 2015 season as the head men’s coach at Iowa Wesleyan … Shaw hired Luis Cortell to lead its new men’s and women’s teams. Both programs will compete as club in the fall with the intention of competing as Division II sponsorships in the fall of 2017. Cortell spent the past year as head coach of the Charlotte United Futbol Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Men’s and women’s swimming − Oklahoma Christian will add intercollegiate men's and women's swimming programs for the 2017-18 academic year, with five-time Olympic medalist Josh Davis to serve as the coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Minnesota State women’s coach Christie Williams resigned after five years with the program.

Wrestling Josh Malave has been named head wrestling coach at Mount Union. Malave has been the head coach at Firelands High School in Oberlin, Ohio, since 2014.  

Staff

Kaitlin Brassil and Becca Elschlager were both named assistant athletic trainers at Bradley. Brassil spent the past two years as assistant athletic trainer at Upper Iowa. Elschlager recently completed a postgraduate internship at Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida … Washington U. in St. Louis announced the hiring of Jamaica Cannon as the assistant director-intramural sports for the office of recreation.

Conferences

Mike Matthews, who has served as commissioner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association since February 2013, announced that he is stepping down … The North Atlantic Conference appointed Marcella K. Zalot as commissioner. Zalot becomes only the second permanent commissioner, succeeding Julie Muller who is finishing her 11th year with the conference … Conference USA named Drew Mitchell to fill the newly created position of associate commissioner/chief revenue officer. Mitchell spent the past six seasons with the Texas Legends of the NBA Developmental League.

Deaths

Longtime San Jose State coach Howard Eugene “Gene” Menges died June 6 at age 90. Menges, who was a quarterback on the 1948-50 Spartan football teams, was an assistant football coach at San Jose State from 1952 to 1968, an assistant baseball coach in 1969 and head baseball coach from 1970 to 1986.

Presidents and chancellors − Timothy M. Downs, the provost and chief academic officer of Niagara University, was named president of Northern State … ​Ellen N. Junn, provost and vice president for academic affairs for Cal State Dominguez Hills, was named president of Stanislaus State … Andrew Rogerson, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Sonoma State, has been named chancellor of Little Rock. He is expected to begin his role Sept. 1.

Athletics director − Eastern New Mexico selected Greg Waggoner as athletics director. Waggoner served as Western State's Director of Athletics from 1994 to 2014. He replaces Jeff Geiser, who is retiring after seven years as athletics director … Baylor announced that Vice President and Director of Athletics Ian McCaw resigned his position.

Associate athletics director − Southern Mississippi hired Kylie Amato as associate athletics director for academic support services. Amato spent the past seven years as an academic counselor at Mississippi State … David Sabolcik Jr. has been named senior associate athletics director of external operations at Northern Colorado … Jonathan Botros has been named the senior associate athletics director for finance administration at Texas Tech.

Assistant athletics director − Clemson hired Owen Godfrey as assistant athletics director for ticket operations/sales. Godfrey spent three years as director of ticket sales and operations at Georgia Tech … Minot State’s longtime head baseball coach Brock Weppler is moving to assistant athletics director for development … Jim Mullen, assistant director of athletics for operations at Assumption, has announced his retirement after working at the college for 19 years … Fresno Pacific announced the addition of two athletics staff members: Bryan Huettmann as assistant athletics director for event operations and facilities, and Jordan Herrod as assistant director of athletics communications.  

Coaches

Baseball − Cal State San Marcos hired Sioux Falls head coach Matt Guiliano to lead the Cougars.

Men’s basketball − Fayetteville State announced Ken Spencer as head coach. Spencer, who previously was head coach at Saint Augustine’s, most recently was associate head coach at South Carolina State … Salem International hired Adam Williams as head coach. A former guard at Kentucky and Marshall, Williams spent a year as an assistant at Longwood.

Men’s basketball assistants − Matt Braeuer has been named director of men’s basketball operations at College of Charleston. The former three-year Wichita State starter most recently spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State.

Women’s basketball − Fresno Pacific hired alum Tim Beauregard as head coach. Beauregard served as the lead assistant on a national championship team at Azusa Pacific … After 16 years as head coach at Valdosta State, Kiley Hill announced his resignation to take an assistant coach position at Southern Mississippi … Chowan named LaToya Jones head coach to replace Patrick Mashuda, who is leaving to become an assistant at Kent State. Jones previously served at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, most recently as director of basketball operations.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics − Eastern Michigan head women’s coach Jay Santos has accepted the head coaching position at Arizona State. In two seasons at the helm of the Eastern Michigan program, Santos compiled a record of 28-8-1.

Conferences

The Big Ten promoted Scott Chipman to associate commissioner, football operations; Jessica Palermo to assistant commissioner, men’s and women’s basketball operations; and Kerry Kenny to assistant commissioner, public affairs.

Deaths

Longtime Lehman employee Ron Carter died May 26. Carter served the college and the athletics department for more than 35 years as a student-athlete on the basketball team, as an assistant basketball coach and as assistant athletics director.
