February 24

Presidents and chancellors — Jennifer Frum was named interim president of Armstrong State. Frum has served as vice president for public service and outreach at Georgia.

Athletics directors — Boston College Director of Athletics Brad Bates is resigning at the end of the academic year to join Collegiate Sports Associates, an executive search and consulting agency in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Bates has served as director of athletics at Boston College since 2012 … Longtime West Chester Athletics Director Edward M. Matejkovic announced he would retire at the end of June. Matejkovic is in his 22nd year as director of athletics at West Chester.

Assistant athletics director — Tom Fenstermaker has been named assistant athletics director for communications at High Point.

Associate athletics director — Adelphi hired alum Emily Dorko as associate athletics director and director of external relations … Winthrop hired Sherika Montgomery as associate athletics director for student success. Montgomery spent the past seven years at the Big South Conference, most recently as the assistant commissioner and senior woman administrator.

Coaches

Men’s basketball — Mark Gottfried will not return as North Carolina State's head coach after the 2016-17 season, his sixth season leading the Wolfpack.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Vermont interim men’s coach Rob Dow was promoted to head coach. Dow has spent the previous five seasons on Vermont’s coaching staff, including the past two years as associate head coach … California associate head coach Chris Lemay has been named the Utah Valley women's soccer head coach. 

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Dave Shoji will retire after 42 seasons as head women’s coach at Hawaii. Shoji has a 1,202-204-1 record with the women’s team and four national championships. Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, a former Hawaii All-American and Olympian, will take over for Shoji. Ah Mow-Santos served as assistant coach at Hawaii from 2011 to 2015.

Wrestling — Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson will step down after the season to assume an administrative role within the athletics department. Kevin Dresser, the 2016 National Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year, will return to his native state to become head coach at Iowa State. Dresser has been Virginia Tech’s coach since 2006-07. He had a long high school coaching career before that.

Deaths

Clemson Associate Athletics Director Bert Henderson, 60, was found dead Feb. 21. His started at Clemson in 1978 as an athletic trainer.

February 20

Presidents and chancellors — Susan L. Thomas was named president of Truman, effective March 1. Thomas, who has served as interim president of Truman since July, was Truman’s executive vice president for academic affairs and provost for two years … Janine Davidson will be the next president of Metropolitan State University of Denver. Davidson most recently served as undersecretary of the U.S. Navy … Pace chose Marvin Krislov as president. Krislov has been president at Oberlin since 2007.

Athletics directors — San Jose State announced Athletics Director Gene Bleymaier was named special advisor to the president, focusing on plans for athletics facilities. Deputy Athletics Director Marie Tuite was named interim athletics director … Concordia (New York) named Kathy Laoutaris director of athletics. Laoutaris has been serving as the interim director of athletics since fall.

Associate athletics directors — Michael J. Diorka, associate director of athletics for facility management at Pennsylvania since 2007, has announced his retirement.

Coaches

Women’s basketball — Willis Holliday was named head coach at North Greenville to replace Jayne Arledge, who is retiring at the end of the 2017 season after 36 years as head coach. Holliday has served as the team’s associate head coach for the past year.

Field hockey — Shippensburg hired Tara Zollinger as head coach. Zollinger, a 2013 Maryland graduate, spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Syracuse.

Football assistants — Stony Brook added Matt Hachmann to its defensive coaching staff. Hachmann, the former defensive coordinator at Towson, will be the Seawolves linebackers coach.

Men’s and women’s golf — Illinois-Chicago hired Mat Blair as interim head coach of the women’s team. Blair previously was head coach at Valparaiso from 2011 to 2016.

Men’s and women’s soccer — University of Northern Iowa hired Bruce Erickson as head coach of the women’s team. Erickson most recently was head women’s coach at Wayne State (Nebraska) for the past two years.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Loni Hammons was named head coach of the women’s team at American International. She was a high school coach for nearly 11 years … Albany State (Georgia) named Jo Ann Matthews interim head coach for the women’s program.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Virginia promoted Aaron Smith to head coach of the women’s team. Smith spent the past five years as assistant coach and associate head coach at Virginia … Manhattan named Lora Sarich as head coach of the women’s team. Sarich previously was head coach at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima … Randi Smart resigned as head women’s coach at Cal State L.A. to accept the associate head coach position at Wake Forest. Juan Figueroa, a former two-time All-American at Southern California, was appointed interim head women’s coach at Cal State L.A. … Illinois announced Chris Tamas as head coach of the women’s program. The hire is pending completion of university hiring processes and board of trustees approval. Tamas replaces Kevin Hambly, who was named head coach at Stanford … Abilene Christian hired Angela Mooney as head coach of the women’s team. Mooney spent the previous 13 seasons as an assistant coach at UTEP, South Dakota State and Ole Miss … Maryville (Missouri) named Nikki Naccarato head coach of its women’s team. Naccarato most recently was the interim coach of the women’s and men’s teams at Regis (Massachusetts) … Augustana (South Dakota) hired Jennifer Jacobs as head coach of the women’s team. Jacobs spent the past five seasons at Augsburg, where she was an assistant volleyball coach and most recently assistant athletics director for external relations/inclusion and diversity.

Presidents and chancellors — Wheeling Jesuit named Debra Townsley interim president. Townsley most recently served five years as president of William Peace.

Athletics directors — Bryan Maggard, who spent the past 21 years in athletics administration at Missouri, was introduced as director of athletics for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette … Deborah Chin, associate vice president and director of athletics and recreation at New Haven, announced her retirement, effective Feb. 15. Chin began her career at New Haven as coordinator of women’s athletics in 1975 and was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletics program, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. She won more than 570 career matches as head coach of women’s volleyball. She has served as athletics director since 1993 … Hampden-Sydney Athletics Director Richard Epperson resigned for personal reasons. He had been in the post since 2011 … Cleveland State appointed Michael Thomas as athletics director. Previously, Thomas served as athletics director at Illinois from 2011 to 2015.

Associate athletics directors — Iona promoted Matt Glovaski from senior associate athletics director to deputy director of athletics … Morgan State promoted Erlease Wagner from assistant athletics director for compliance to deputy athletics director. Wagner also previously served a stint as interim director of athletics.

Assistant athletics directors — Jared Alexander was named assistant athletics director for sales and marketing at Grand Valley State. Alexander most recently was assistant director of athletics for external operations at Missouri-St. Louis … Justin King, a 2010 South Carolina graduate, was named associate athletics director for new and creative media at his alma mater.

Coaches

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Lindsay Allman was named head coach of the Indiana State women’s team. Allman most recently spent a season as an assistant at Wake Forest.

Men’s basketball — Mars Hill named Vic Finora head coach. Finora, who joined the Lions as an assistant coach in 2015, served as the interim head coach for most of the 2016-17 season.

Women’s basketball — North Greenville coach Jayne Arledge is stepping down at the end of the season, ending a 36-year head coaching career at the university. Arledge will continue as senior woman administrator and as an instructor in the university’s physical education program.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field — Salem International hired Nicholas Gibson as head men’s cross country and track and field coach. Gibson, a 2015 graduate of Shippensburg, was previously the assistant cross country and track and field coach at Queens (North Carolina).

Men’s and women’s golf assistants — Former College of Charleston standout Alex Ellis was named an assistant coach at his alma mater. Ellis competed for the Cougars from 2010 to 2014.

Field hockey — Merrimack head coach Anne Rounce is stepping down after a decision by the school to change the coaching position from part-time to full-time. Rounce, a 2007 Merrimack graduate, has a 108-68 record in nine years as head coach.

Football assistants — Jay Nunez, an assistant coach at Southern Illinois, was named an assistant at Eastern Michigan. Nunez will be special teams coordinator and tight ends coach … San Jose State hired Jamar Cain as defensive line coach, Fred Guidici as a quality control coach, and Ben Thienes as the program’s director of football operations … Brandon Lynch was named defensive backs coach at East Carolina. He previously worked four years at the University of Northern Iowa, serving as associate head coach for defense during the 2015 and 2016 seasons … Robert Prunty was named defensive line coach at East Carolina. Prunty previously spent four years at Cincinnati, most recently as co-defensive coordinator.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Delaware men’s coach Bob Shillinglaw announced he would retire at the end of the season. Shillinglaw, who began his career with the Blue Hens in 1979, will complete his 39th season as head coach at Delaware this spring and his 42nd season overall as a head coach. 

Men’s and women’s soccer — King (Tennessee) hired Leah Presley as coach of the women’s team. Presley was an assistant the past three years at the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico … Washburn hired Jamie Hutchison as head coach of its women’s team. Hutchison spent the past two seasons as head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff … Yvonna Press, who was an assistant coach on the Massachusetts Maritime staff for three seasons, was promoted to head coach of the women’s team. She replaces Ray Cabral, who retired at the end of the 2016 season … Mike Madigan was named head coach of the men’s team at Wartburg. Madigan had been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator since 2012 at Macalester … Tony Paris, a past assistant coach with Saint Leo men’s team and founding coach of the women’s team, is returning as head coach of the men’s team … West Liberty named Thomas Olivier as head coach of its new men’s team. The Hilltoppers will field a club team in the fall before moving up to Division II status in 2018. Olivier spent eight years as the top assistant at Marshall.

Softball — Ashland head coach Sheilah Gulas, who also serves as assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator, announced her retirement, effective at the end of the 2017 season. Gulas will conclude her 21st season leading the Eagles and 31st as a head coach at the collegiate level.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Merrimack hired Alex Loyer as interim head coach of the men's team. Loyer served as an assistant coach on the men’s and women’s staffs at Massachusetts Boston beginning in 2014 … Albany State (Georgia) announced it intends to replace James Lenny Gray, interim head coach of the women’s team.

Conferences

The West Coast Conference hired Connie Hurlbut as senior associate commissioner. Hurlbut has more than 30 years of collegiate athletics administration experience, most recently as deputy commissioner at the Western Athletic Conference.

Deaths

Wen Xu, 22, a Drury swimmer from China, died Feb. 2 after experiencing a medical emergency during practice. Xu, an advertising and public relations major, was an NCAA Division II champion in the 50-yard freestyle in 2016 and was on Drury’s championship 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams in 2015. Her 2016 time of 22.36 seconds in the 50 freestyle preliminaries is an NCAA championship record … Michael Boland, 23, a team captain and four-year letterwinner on the Massachusetts football team, died suddenly Feb. 4 at his home in Maryland. Boland, who graduated in 2016, played in 43 career games and started 32 of his final 36 contests at right guard.

 

Feb. 3

Presidents and chancellors — Joseph Jones was named president of Fresno Pacific. Jones has served as a chief administrative academic officer, dean and full-time faculty member in Christian colleges and universities in the United States and Pakistan, most recently as vice rector (provost) at Forman Christian College, in Lahore, Pakistan. He will begin work July 1, succeeding Richard Kriegbaum, who is completing his second term as president.

Athletics directors — Southern Mississippi hired Jon Gilbert as director of athletics. Gilbert has served as executive senior associate athletics director at Tennessee since 2011 … Presbyterian named Edward W. Steers to serve as interim director of athletics. Steers previously served as associate athletics director at The Citadel for 12 years and later as athletics director and physical education chairman at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina … Longtime wrestling coach Miles Van Hee was named director of athletics at Western State. Van Hee, who has coached Western State wrestling for 20 years, will continue coaching until the end of the season … Steve Bruning, Capital director of athletics and recreation, announced he will step down to transition into a leadership role at the newly constructed Convergence Media Center at the Bexley, Ohio, campus. Bruning has served as athletics director since 2012.

Associate athletics directors — South Carolina Aiken promoted Angie Osbon to associate athletics director/business and student-athlete services. She is the senior woman administrator … Texas A&M International hired Kelly Higgins as associate athletics director for external operations … Jeff Crane has been promoted to executive associate athletics director at South Carolina … Texas A&M selected Lori Williams as senior associate athletics director … Missouri selected Nick Joos as senior associate athletics director for strategic communications … Miriam Merrill has been named Hamilton's associate director of athletics/senior woman administrator … Oregon State promoted Sara Elcano to associate athletics director for fan engagement and revenue generation … Jamaal Walton was named associate athletics director for external operations at the College of Charleston. He has been director of marketing and promotions at Alabama since 2012.

Assistant athletics directors — VMI named Korey Bruck assistant athletics director for academics and compliance. Bruck previously served as an athletics academic support coordinator at Army West Point … William A. Aloia Jr. was named assistant athletics director for compliance and life skills at Manhattan.

Coaches

Baseball — Wayne Jones was named interim head coach at Saint Rose. Jones has spent the past two years as a Golden Knights assistant coach … Urbana named Jake Oester head coach. Oester spent the past year at Alderson Broaddus as recruiting coordinator.

Men’s basketball — Flagler head coach Bo Clark announced he would retire at the end of the 2016-17 season, wrapping up a coaching career that spanned 36 years, 31 of those at Flagler … Gary Nottingham will no longer serve as head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan. Jack Meriwether was named interim head coach.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Florida Southern announced Hyrum Keime as head coach of its new beach volleyball team, which will begin play next year. Keime is currently an assistant coach for the women’s indoor team. Jill Stephens, assistant athletics director and head coach of the women’s indoor team, will be director of volleyball and oversee both programs … Regis (Colorado) appointed Joel List as head coach of its women’s team. List started at Regis as the top assistant in 2006 … Lauren Baufield, an assistant women’s coach at East Tennessee State, was named head coach of the women’s team at Francis Marion … J.T. Wenger — a former assistant at UCLA, Colorado and Michigan State — was named head coach of the UT Arlington women’s program … Minot State hired Dana Cordova as head coach of its women’s team. Cordova spent the past six seasons as head coach at Tiffin … Lindenwood (Missouri) hired Will Condon as head coach of its women’s team. Condon was previously head coach at Armstrong State … Salem International hired Ashley Ziegle as head coach of its women’s team. Ziegle, a 2012 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan, was most recently head coach at her alma mater … Sarah Rauen was named head coach of the women’s team at Minnesota-Crookston. Rauen previously worked as an assistant at North Dakota State and her alma mater, Green Bay.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball assistants — Delaware hired Kimberly Lambert and Keith Anderson as assistant coaches for its women’s team. Lambert recently completed her first season as director of operations at North Carolina State, after serving as an assistant coach with the Wolfpack the previous three years. Anderson spent the past two seasons as an assistant on the UT Arlington staff.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field — Reece Vega was named head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Saint Rose. He has spent the past four years as the head track and field coach at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, and has been head coach of the cross country programs since 2015 … Don Hood was named head coach of the new men’s and women’s track and field programs at LeTourneau. Hood has been the girls athletics coordinator and head boys and girls track and cross country coach at Brownwood High School in Texas since 2009 … West Liberty hired Justin Simpson as head coach of the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country programs. Simpson has spent the past decade as a volunteer assistant track and cross country coach at West Virginia.

Field hockey — Gloria O'Connor retired as Adelphi head coach, effective Jan. 31. O'Connor had led the program since its resumption on campus in 2008. Assistant coach Mary Moore was named interim head coach.

Football — West Georgia head coach Will Hall resigned to accept the offensive coordinator position at Louisiana. West Georgia named David Dean head coach. Dean, who most recently was an offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern, previously was head coach at Valdosta State, where he led the Blazers to Division II national championships in 2007 and 2012 … West Virginia State hired John Pennington as head coach. Pennington, who had been the interim head coach since December, served as offensive coordinator for the past two seasons and was the offensive line and special teams coach in 2010 … Minot State selected Mike Aldrich as head coach. Aldrich spent two seasons as assistant coach and defensive line/linebackers coach at Southwest Minnesota State. 

Football assistants — Stony Brook promoted linebackers coach Bobby McIntyre to the position of defensive coordinator … Levern Belin was named defensive line coach for Delaware. 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Newberry hired Nick Cotter to lead its new men’s team, which will begin its first season of competition in spring 2018. Cotter was a three-time All-American at Dowling. He has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Saint Leo.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Eastern women’s coach Dan Mouw is stepping down to serve full-time as director of athletics communications … Colorado State-Pueblo head women’s coach Paul Regrutto resigned from his position to focus on his family. Assistant coach Pascale Rocca will serve as interim head coach. Regrutto went 36-31-6 in four seasons at Colorado State-Pueblo … Derek Potteiger, a two-time All-American at Penn State and head coach at Gordon for the past four years, has been named head coach of the Lee men’s team … Adam Reeves, associate head coach of the men’s team at Cal Poly Pomona, was named acting head coach … Keith Fulk, Saint Leo head men's coach for the past six seasons, is stepping down to take a position with the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ player development program. Ged O'Connor, head coach of the Saint Leo women's team, also has resigned. O’Connor accepted a head coaching position at Troy after 11 years at the helm at Saint Leo … Drury men’s coach Ryan Swan will step down to accept the head coaching job for the men’s team at Northern Illinois. Swan has been the Panthers head coach for eight seasons and compiled a record of 106-47-8 … After four years as head men’s coach at Pfeiffer, Bob Reasso has stepped down from his coaching position. He will remain as vice president for athletics as the department transitions to Division III. Associate head coach Tony Faticoni was promoted to head coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants — Former Tampa head coach Gerry Lucey has joined the Hofstra women’s program as a volunteer assistant coach. Lucey headed the Tampa women’s team from 2007 to 2015 … Norwich hired Heather Faasse as assistant coach for women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse … Delaware selected Taylor Wilson as assistant coach of its women’s team. Wilson enjoyed a standout playing career at Seton Hall in 2008-11. She spent the past two seasons as assistant coach of the women’s team at St. John’s (New York). 

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Pfeiffer announced Amy Prior as head coach of its new women’s team, which will begin competition in the fall. Prior is an adjunct professor at Pfeiffer and has been involved in swimming in North Carolina since 1982.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Cameron named Josh Cobble as head coach of the women’s and men’s programs. Cobble spent seven years as the head women’s and men’s coach at Cowley College in Kansas.

Deaths

John Buchanan, who worked at Simon Fraser for 50 years, died Jan. 19 at age 77. Buchanan started the Clan men’s soccer program and later re-established the golf programs … Elwood N. “Al” Shields, Bentley’s first athletics director, died Jan. 24 at age 80. Shields was named athletics director and basketball coach at Bentley in 1963. He coached until 1978 and was athletics director until October 1991 … Sonny Watkins, 74, a former athletics director at McNeese, died Jan. 27. Watkins was a four-year basketball letterman at McNeese. He served 11 years as athletics director of his alma mater, beginning in 1995. He also served stints as a co-women’s basketball coach and assistant athletics director at McNeese … Adam Ellingson, who played baseball at Minnesota State Mankato, died unexpectedly Jan. 31. Ellingson, 20, was a pitcher and catcher for the Mavericks.
