February 19

Presidents and chancellors – Brian Posler, provost at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, has been named president of Lake Erie. He will take office June 15 … Northern State President James M. Smith announced that he has accepted the position of president at Eastern Michigan. He will take his new post July 1.  

Athletics directors – Purdue Athletics Director Morgan Burke announced he will retire in July 2017. He has led Purdue athletics since 1993 … Thomas Brennan is stepping down as director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation at La Salle after more than 18 years guiding the university’s 22 teams … Illinois selected alumnus Josh Whitman as its new director of athletics. Whitman, who most recently was director of athletics at Washington U. in St. Louis, was a four-year starting tight end and two-time Academic All-American for Illinois football … Kyndall Waters has been named athletics director at Birmingham-Southern. Waters will take over the post June 1 when Athletics Director Joe Dean Jr. begins his new role as senior vice president for advancement for the college. Waters, who played volleyball for the Panthers and is a member of the Birmingham-Southern Sports Hall of Fame, has served as the college’s assistant athletics director for compliance since 2007.

Associate athletics directors – Bradley hired Joe Whitson as associate athletics director for athletic training services. Whitson spent the past 11 years at Illinois State, where he was an associate athletic trainer … Jessica Cherry is joining Colby as associate athletics director. Cherry, most recently the senior associate athletics director at York (New York), was the only woman serving as a men’s assistant basketball coach in the NCAA when she started in the post at York in 1996 … Bucknell appointed Lauren Cavallaro as its first associate director of athletics for leadership development. In her new post, she will coordinate and implement programming for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy for student-athletes. Cavallaro most recently was an assistant athletics director for student-athlete development at Rice.

Assistant athletics directors – Alcorn State appointed Jamea Adams-Ginyard to be assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator. Her new duties include managing student auxiliary groups and guiding the sports information staff. 

Coaches

Baseball assistants – Concordia (California) promoted Joe Turgeon to head coach. Turgeon was an assistant coach with the program for seven seasons.

Men’s basketball – Bill Brown, who has been head coach at California (Pennsylvania) for 20 years, announced he was retiring at the end of the season. He is the winningest active coach in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Lynn hired Chris Wood as head women’s cross country coach and the school's first director of sports performance. Wood previously was the head coach for Pfeiffer’s men’s and women’s track and field programs, which started competition during the 2014-15 school year.

Football assistants – Fred Reed has been named an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. Reed, who was most recently the defensive backs coach at Syracuse, has 22 years of coaching experience, including 20 seasons in the college ranks and two in the National Football League UTSA hired Patrick Toney as defensive backs coach. Toney previously worked as an assistant at Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana … Stony Brook has added Carmen Felus to the staff as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and announced the promotion of offensive line coach Chris Bache to co-offensive coordinator. Felus spent the past two seasons as an assistant at West Alabama.

Men’s and women’s golf – Lincoln (Missouri) named Aaron Murphy head coach of the men’s team. Murphy, a four-year golfer at Lincoln who was inducted into the Lincoln Athletic Hall of Fame last fall, most recently coached high school golf. 

Men’s and women’s soccer – After 32 years as head coach of the Westminster (Utah) men’s program, Chris Dorich has announced he is retiring. Dorich, the only head coach in the program’s history, leaves with a career record of 285-272-45. Westminster is in the first year of the membership process to become an NCAA Division II school … Joel DeLass was named head men’s coach at Northwest Nazarene. He spent the past four seasons as the top assistant for Wheaton (Illinois) … Saint Joseph’s (Indiana) named Justin Olson head women’s coach. Olson spent four years at Calumet College of Saint Joseph (Whiting, Indiana) as the men’s and women’s coach.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Barton chose Tyler Ziegler to serve as the first head coach of its new men’s and women’s swimming program. Ziegler, who swam for four years at York (Pennsylvania), was a graduate assistant the past two years with the men’s and women’s teams at Catholic.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Glenville State hired James Mercer as the head coach of its women’s team. Mercer last coached at Genesee Community College and has many years of coaching experience, much of it at the junior level.

Deaths

Ty Laporte, who was on the volleyball and track and field teams at Ole Miss, died Feb. 11 in a car accident. Laporte, 23, from Irmo, South Carolina, was in her senior season at Ole Miss, where she majored in integrated marketing communications. On the volleyball court, Laporte finished her college career in the fall ranked third all-time in block assists with 280 and third all-time in total blocks with 334. She ranked ninth in school history in the outdoor high jump, with a clearance of 5 feet, 7.75 inches … UAB Associate Athletics Director Norm Reilly died of cancer Feb. 12 at age 56. Reilly, who started at UAB in 2002 as an assistant athletics director for media relations, mentored and managed the athletics communications team and served as the primary media contact for UAB football, among other sports. He previously worked at the National Senior Games Association and in the athletics departments at East Carolina and Georgia … Don'Kevious Johnson, 23, a linebacker on the Bethune-Cookman football team, was killed Feb. 13 in an off-campus shooting. Johnson, a sophomore psychology major, began his college career at Alabama State before transferring to Bethune-Cookman.

February 12

Presidents and Chancellors – Elizabeth MacLeod Walls was appointed president of William Jewell. She will succeed David Sallee, who will retire July 31 after serving as president since 2000. MacLeod Walls currently oversees graduate and adult education at four locations for Nebraska Wesleyan … Pamela Balch, the first female president of West Virginia Wesleyan, will step down in December. In her more than 10 years as president, she has added co-curricular and athletics programs and has helped put the school in good financial standing … David J. Livingston, president of Lourdes University in Ohio, will become president of Lewis on July 1. He will succeed Brother James Gaffney, who will retire June 30 after 28 years of service to Lewis.

Athletics directors Southern California Athletics Director Pat Haden announced he would retire effective June 30. However, Haden, who has been athletics director since 2010, will remain at the university through June 2017 to guide the renovation of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum … Plattsburgh State hired Mike Howard as its new director of athletics. For the past 19 years, Howard has been the associate director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation at St. Lawrence … Jeff Cleanthes, assistant athletics director and head baseball coach at Rhodes, has been promoted to director of athletics. He will continue to coach through the 2016-17 season. Cleanthes succeeds Mike Clary, who retired after 26 years as athletics director.

Associate athletics directors Stetson promoted Ricky Hazel from assistant to associate director of athletics. Hazel, who is in his fifth year as a member of the Stetson athletics senior staff, oversees communications, serves as chief licensing official and is the athletics department’s liaison with Stetson Broadcast Productions … Scott Carr has joined UCF as executive associate athletics director/chief marketing officer. Carr, formerly senior associate athletics director for external affairs at Auburn, will oversee the communications, fan development and video services units at UCF… Liz Jarnigan has been named associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Air Force. Jarnigan had been in athletics administration at San Jose State since 2008 … Syracuse hired Anthony Di Fino as associate athletics director for business development. Di Fino, a native of Syracuse, New York, will work as a member of an external relations team that steers decisions on marketing, fundraising, ticketing, sponsorship and communications initiatives.

Assistant athletics directors –  Linda Anderson has been named assistant athletics director for internal affairs at Wayne State (Nebraska). Anderson, who was an associate athletics director at Truman State, is a native of Wayne, Nebraska.

Coaches

Cross country and track and field – Carson-Newman hired Tyler Stepp as head coach of its men’s and women’s cross country teams. Stepp, a former collegiate track and field All-American, had been an assistant track and field coach at Carson-Newman for two seasons.

Football – Ball State hired alumnus Mike Neu as head coach. Neu, who played quarterback for the Cardinals and was the 1993 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year, spent the past two seasons as quarterbacks coach for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and has 15 years of coaching experience.

Football assistants – San Jose State added four defensive coaches. Arnold Ale was named linebackers coach; Ron English was appointed defensive coordinator; Will Harris was tabbed as defensive backs coach; and Barry Sacks was selected as defensive line coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Kayte Mills has been named the head women’s coach at Post. Mills spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach of Western Connecticut State’s women’s team … Shepherd named Jenny Cavey its interim women's coach. Cavey, a 2014 Shepherd graduate, replaces Meghan Keelan, who resigned to accept an assistant coach position at Arizona State … Colby named Jon Hunt to be interim men’s coach for the 2016 season. Hunt, a former assistant men’s coach at Colby, has served as head coach at the University of New England and Bridgton Academy.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Cal Poly Pomona has hired Jay Mason to lead its women's team. Mason had been an assistant for 10 years with St. Edward’s, where his responsibilities included training goalkeepers and defenders … James Price will take over as new head women’s coach at Upper Iowa. Price spent six seasons as head coach at the University of Northern Iowa, where he led the Panthers to 33 victories in six seasons … Southern Indiana named Eric Schoenstein head coach of the women’s program. Schoenstein, who was serving as interim head coach, started as an assistant at Southern Indiana in 2014 and played for the Screaming Eagles men’s team from 1988 to 1991.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – Holy Cross hired Caitlin Pickul as assistant coach of the women’s team. Pickul was an assistant at Wellesley for the past five seasons.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Rollins named Mika Robinson, who spent eight seasons as Berry head coach, to lead its women’s team. At Berry, Robinson amassed a 169-88 record with three conference championships and a pair of NCAA tournament berths. She was also an assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator at Berry. Berry assistant coach Caitlyn Jansen was named to replace Robinson. Jansen played at Christopher Newport from 2007 to 2010 and has been with Berry’s program since 2012 … Alabama-Huntsville hired Cade Smith to lead the women’s team. Smith spent three seasons as an assistant on the staff … Iona head coach Jon Killingbeck will be the new women’s coach for Saint Martin’s. Killingbeck was at Iona five years … Fresno Pacific has hired Tracy Ainger-Schulte as head coach of its women’s team. Ainger-Schulte, who played three years for the Sunbirds and is in the school’s hall of fame, returns to her alma mater after nine seasons as head coach at Fresno City College … Gayle Stammer is stepping down as head coach of the Dominican (California) women’s team to return to the classroom. Stammer has led the Penguins since the 2010 season.

Staff

Strength and conditioning – Saginaw Valley State hired Chris Winter as strength and conditioning coach. He previously was associate director of sports performance at Illinois State.

Conferences

Aaron Kemp, women’s commissioner of the Western Collegiate Hockey, has resigned. WCHA Men's Commissioner Bill Robertson was named interim commissioner of the women's league … Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton announced his retirement, effective June 30. Fullerton is completing his 20th year as the head of the Division I conference.

Deaths

Ignatius “Jim” Ciszek, 91, who helped found Massachusetts Lowell athletics, died Feb. 5. In 32 years at the school, previously known as Lowell State College and the University of Lowell, Ciszek served as men’s basketball coach, baseball coach and athletics director, guiding the athletics program through the transition from Division III to Division II. He retired in 1986.

February 8

Presidents and chancellors – Southern Connecticut State President Mary A. Papazian has announced she will resign her post in July 2016 to become president of San Jose State. Since taking her post at Southern Connecticut State in 2011, Papazian has established a student success task force and the Office for STEM innovation and Leadership. She also led several major construction projects on campus … Sonoma State has chosen Judy K. Sakaki to be its next president. Sakaki, who currently serves as vice president for student affairs at California, will succeed Ruben Armiñana when he retires in June … Elizabeth City State announced Thomas E. H. Conway Jr. will serve as chancellor on a permanent basis. Conway, who previously was vice chancellor and chief of staff at Fayetteville State, had served as interim chancellor at Elizabeth City State since Stacey Franklin Jones stepped down Dec. 31… Hawaii Pacific has chosen Hawaii native John Yukio Gotanda as its next president. Gotanda, who is currently dean of Villanova’s law school, will succeed President Geoffrey Bannister when he retires in July.

Athletics directors – Johns Hopkins announced that Athletics Director Tom Calder is stepping down to become director of alumni programs for the university. Calder has been with the athletics department for 28 years, first as associate athletics director before becoming director of athletics in 1995 … Michigan appointed Warde Manuel its director of intercollegiate athletics. Manuel, who played football for Michigan under coach Bo Schembechler, has been the director of athletics at UConn since 2012 … Montana State announced it will not renew Athletics Director Peter Fields’ contract, which runs through June … Amy Henkelman has been named athletics director at Dominican (California) after holding the post in an interim capacity. Henkelman joined Dominican in 2013 as associate athletics director and compliance officer.

Associate athletics directors – Chris McIntosh, director of development at Wisconsin, was named associate athletics director for business development. As a student-athlete, McIntosh was a two-year captain of the Wisconsin football team that won back-to-back Rose Bowls and Big Ten championships during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Assistant athletics directors Virginia at Wise named Malinda Berglund its assistant athletics director for internal operations. Berglund most recently served as compliance coordinator, sports information director and game-day manager at Bluefield State. She will oversee all areas of student-athlete eligibility, progress-toward-degree completion and rules education programs in her new role.

Coaches

Baseball assistants – Brent McNeil has been named a volunteer assistant coach for North Florida. McNeil spent two years at Indiana State as the director of baseball operations.

Men’s and women’s basketball assistants – Marcus Kirkland was promoted from assistant to associate head coach of Wingate’s men’s team. This is Kirkland’s fifth year with the team.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Sioux Falls promoted assistant coach Doug Petersen to head coach of its men’s and women’s cross country programs. Petersen takes over for Grant Watley, who stepped down as cross country coach to spend more time with his family. Petersen, who joined the Sioux Falls athletics department in 2014, will remain an assistant coach for track and field … Jason Pyles has been hired as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach for Davis and Elkins’ new program, which begins competition next year. Pyles most recently was associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for cross country and track and field at West Virginia Wesleyan and previously spent two years as a head cross country and track and field coach at Charleston (West Virginia) … Auburn Montgomery hired Ryan Thompson as head men’s and women’s cross country coach. Thompson was the cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at Charleston Southern for most of the past six years … Saint Rose dismissed men’s and women’s track and field coach Michael McCadney.

Football California (Pennsylvania) announced Gary Dunn would be its new head coach. Dunn, who played for the Vulcans from 1991 to 1994, spent six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Duquesne after 13 years at Morehead State … Ohio Dominican named Kelly Cummings its new head coach. Cummings joined the program in 2013 as the defensive coordinator.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse Rosemont hired Kasey McCusker to coach its women’s team. McCusker has worked as a lacrosse coach in Cecil County, Maryland, since 2008.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants Maddie Taghon has been hired as an assistant coach for Shenandoah’s women’s team. Taghon, who played three years for Presbyterian, most recently coached for one year at Ampleforth College.

Men’s and women’s soccer UNC Pembroke announced Phil Hindson had stepped down as head coach of its men’s program to take a position as assistant coach of Winthrop’s men’s program. This will be Hindson’s second stint as an assistant at Winthrop, where he coached from 2000 to 2004 … Wisconsin-Oshkosh men’s coach Wytse Molenaar has been named head coach of Albion’s men’s program. Molenaar led Wisconsin-Oshkosh to a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and three berths in the NCAA Division III tournament in his six seasons there … Saint Joseph’s (Indiana) hired Paschal Dunne as its head men’s coach. Dunne spent three seasons as director of coaching at Demopolis Elite Soccer in Alabama and has 14 years of experience as head coach at Martin Methodist College in Tennessee … A 2015 Salem International graduate, Whitney Brydge was named head coach of the women’s team at her alma mater. Brydge, who was appointed interim head coach in August, was a three-year starter at goalkeeper for the Tigers. She led all of NCAA Division II as a freshman in 2011 with 190 saves.

Soccer assistants – Henry Zapata was named associate head coach of the Lamar women’s team. Zapata was an assistant at Elon last season and also has worked as an assistant at Georgia.

Softball assistants – Jimmy Bowman has been hired as an assistant coach for Shenandoah. Bowman was an assistant for Virginia Wesleyan from 2013 to 2015.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving Mount St. Mary’s announced Neil Yost will serve as head coach of its new men’s swimming and diving program, which begins competition in 2016-17. Yost is in his 11th season as coach of the women’s program.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Billings, Montana, native Casey Williams is returning to her hometown to become the head coach of the Montana State Billings women’s team. Williams previously was head coach at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas … University of the Sciences hired Rich Saunders to be head coach of the women’s team. Saunders was an assistant for the team the past two seasons … Melody Tenney was named head coach of the Chowan women’s team. She spent the past two years as head coach at Truett-McConnell College … Maryville (Missouri) named Ashlee Brockenbrough interim head coach of its women’s team. Brockenbrough played for Maryville as a student-athlete and was on the Saints coaching staff during the 2015 season … James Rogers was named head coach of the women’s team at Salem International. Rogers, who has been the assistant volleyball coach and recruiting coordinator for the past two seasons, is also head coach of the tennis programs.

Staff 

Communications – Kennesaw State has hired Mike DeGeorge as assistant athletics director for communications and broadcasting. DeGeorge spent the past four years as an assistant director of communications at Georgia Tech and was the primary contact for football and baseball … James Madison has promoted Kevin Warner to the post of assistant athletics director for communications. Warner, who became the interim director July 1, joined the university’s athletics department in 2006.

Marketing – Oklahoma State athletics hired Emma Kelley as its new director of marketing. She previously was manager of customer service and ticket sales for the department.

Deaths

Northwest Missouri State football player Nicholas C. Turner was found dead Jan. 31. Turner, a junior corporate recreation and wellness major from St. Louis, was a defensive end for the Bearcats. In the 12 games he played during the 2015 season, he recorded 22 total tackles, including seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also had a sack in the team’s 34-7 victory over Shepherd in the Division II championship game … Two former Delaware offensive linemen died in January. Chris Coyne, an All-America center for the Blue Hens in 1987, died Jan. 18 at his home in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. He was 50. Christian Marchena, 22, a backup offensive lineman from 2011 to 2014, was killed Jan. 28 in a traffic accident in Salem County, New Jersey … Former Clemson rower Brittany Burns died Feb. 2, less than two months after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was 26 … Mercer basketball guard Jibri Bryan, 23, was shot and killed Feb. 2 in the parking lot of a convenience store in Macon, Georgia. Bryan, a graduate student, was a member of the No. 14-seeded team that upset Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2014.

February 1

Athletics Directors – Wisconsin-Stevens Point named Frank O’Brien interim athletics director. O’Brien served 20 years as athletics director at the university before retiring in 2011. He was inducted into the Pointer Hall of Fame in 2012.

Coaches

Football Justin Harper was named interim head coach at Virginia State, replacing Byron Thweatt, who resigned to become linebackers coach at James Madison. Before joining Virginia State as wide receivers coach in 2015, Harper coached wide receivers and special teams at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse – Barton introduced Brit Kadlowec as the head coach of its new women’s lacrosse program. Kadlowec came to Barton from Columbia College in South Carolina, where he served first as an assistant and then as head coach of its women’s team.

Men’s and Women’s Soccer – Fort Lewis head men’s coach Oige Kennedy has resigned to take a position as assistant men’s coach at Stanford. In seven seasons as head coach, Kennedy won two NCAA Division II national championships, two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season titles and two RMAC postseason titles.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving – Robert Bullion will serve as head coach of Salem International’s men’s and women’s swimming program, which is expected to be reinstated for the 2016-17 season. Bullion is currently the university’s aquatics director and head men’s water polo coach.

Men’s and Women’s TennisAdam Williamson was named head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at Assumption. Williamson previously served three seasons as coach of the women’s team at his alma mater, Anna Maria.

Men’s and Women’s Volleyball – Mount Olive head women’s coach Colby Mangum stepped down after two years leading the Trojans. Mangum, a former student-athlete for Mount Olive, also served as an assistant with Mount Olive’s men’s team.

Staff

Bobby Lindsey has been promoted to director of annual giving and ticketing at Kennesaw State. Since 2012, Lindsey has directed the athletics ticket office, where he instituted new ticketing technologies and practices designed to improve the ticket-buying process … The Academy of Art has named Terry Tumey its senior advisor to athletics. Tumey previously worked as director of athletics at UC Davis and Dominican (California).

Conferences

Sara Eisenhauer was hired as assistant commissioner for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Eisenhauer previously was at St. Catherine, where she was the first  full-time sports information director for the university … The Atlantic Coast Conference has named Ted Jackson its first assistant coordinator for football replay. Jackson previously served as an ACC on-field official for 28 years and an ACC replay official for 11 seasons.
