PROP approves tweak to water polo penalty structure

Minor acts of misconduct can be called at any time

Water polo officials will have more flexibility to address player conduct beginning with the 2015-16 academic year.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a rules change during its March 5 teleconference that allows officials to call 20-second exclusion penalties for minor acts of misconduct at any time, including while play is halted between periods. The current rule allows officials to call 20-second exclusion penalties only during play.

The Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Rules Subcommittee, which recommended the change during its January meeting, believes this change allows officials better control of the game during play and interval times.
