NCAA office of inclusion and human resources partners with NCORE

Educational sessions to focus on intersection of athletics and diversity

The NCAA office of inclusion and human resources will venture into new territory when it presents a special track of educational sessions focusing on race and athletics May 28-June 1 at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Portland, Oregon. 

NCORE is a conference that draws close to 4,000 students, faculty, diversity officers, university officials and subject-matter experts to discuss the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, religion and class as it relates to campus and cultural environments. This marks the first time that the NCAA has partnered with the conference, which is executed through the University of Oklahoma’s Southwest Center for Human Relations Studies. 

“We are delighted to partner with NCORE for the first time and present intriguing, noteworthy and timely athletics-related topics in this well-established, broad-based forum that impacts university communities generally and, more specifically, intercollegiate athletics,” said Katrice Albert, NCAA executive vice president of inclusion and human resources. “We must discuss the contemporary issues of athletics in higher education settings such that we elevate awareness and understanding, encourage institutional change and transformation, and drive equity and inclusive excellence. We will continue to access and join national platforms and forums, such as NCORE, to provide our membership, especially our student-athletes, with a voice to more fully engage in the multidimensional issues that impact them directly.”

Belinda Biscoe, Oklahoma interim senior associate vice president for university outreach, said, “The University of Oklahoma’s NCORE conference is excited about its partnership with the NCAA to have a focus at this year’s conference on the intersection of athletics and diversity in all its facets. Having authentic and honest dialogues about these topics is long overdue. I know that this will be a lasting partnership with the NCAA and will be the first of many future sessions on these topics as we all work to ensure equity permeates the student-athlete experience.”

NCAA inclusion and human resources will offer 15 educational sessions and a keynote address that specifically focuses on athletics-related topics around race and sports. Presentations will be given by NCAA staff, researchers, athletics administrators and others who will provide their expertise, knowledge and experiences. NCORE presentations are delivered in daily workshops, along with special-feature and breakout sessions. Some of the NCAA sessions include:

  • Policy, Politics and Players: The Intersectionality of Race and Athletics.
  • Strategies for Overcoming Negative Stereotypes of Black Female Student-Athletes in Engineering.
  • Sink or Swim: The Intersections of Race, Athletics and Mental Health.
  • A Leak in the Pipeline: How To Tighten the Faculty Collegiate Athletics Pipeline to Leadership Positions.
  • Life Beyond Athletics: Creating Developmental Experiences for Multicultural Student-Athletes.
  • Moonlighting On and Off the Field: Exploring the Masculinities-, Ethnicity- and Identity-Based Locker Room Conversations That Never Happen.

Other topics will center on redefining black male identity; retention of student-athletes in STEM-related fields; inclusion and diversity in hiring coaches and administrators; LGBTQ intersectionality and inclusion; university internships and access; and success factors of African-American males. NCAA inclusion and human resources requested athletic presentation proposals earlier this year and selected the topics that would be offered.

The elevated platform at NCORE provides the NCAA with a broader base of individuals to share updates and relevant information, which could have significant impact within the university, the surrounding communities, and the student-athlete and general student body population. It also provides the Association with a new cadre of higher education diversity advocates dedicated to extending the support provided to NCAA student-athletes during their collegiate experience and life after the game: ncaa.org/student-athletes/former-student-athlete.

Additionally, there will be a robust discussion about advancing the NCAA Presidential Pledge by enhancing diversity in hiring practices. The inclusion and human resources division is continuing to drive its work with the Presidential Pledge, a commitment from university presidents, chancellors and conference commissioners to promote diversity and gender equity in intercollegiate athletics. College and university presidents and chancellors have been encouraged to sign the pledge committing their schools to achieving greater ethnic and racial diversity and gender equity in college sports through focused attention, bold leadership and strategic action. To date, more than 75 percent of NCAA schools and athletics conferences have signed the pledge. Inclusion and human resources is in now in its second phase of the pledge campaign and is focusing on a commitment-to-action strategy.
