Mountain East Conference to join Division II

Division II will welcome a new conference this fall when the Mountain East Conference becomes an active member.

The Division II Membership Committee accepted the conference’s application at its Feb. 11-12 meeting in Indianapolis. The 12-member conference, which will become an active member Sept. 1, is composed primarily of current members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which will dissolve at the end of the academic year.

“This is a very exciting time for the Mountain East Conference and our 12 charter institutions,” MEC Commissioner Reid Amos said.

“Every one of our schools has great history, great tradition and now a great

future as an MEC member. It has been an exhilarating experience to be a part of the formation of a group of like-minded institutions that has laid a strong foundation for a long and successful association.”

Members of the Mountain East will be Charleston (W. Va.), Concord, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Notre Dame (Ohio), Shepherd, Urbana, Virginia-Wise, West Liberty, West Virginia State, West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit University.

The Mountain East will conduct 16 championships: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf,  men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and women’s volleyball.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference, which applied for Division II membership in 2012, is currently completing an educational assessment program to become an active member conference Sept. 1, 2013, as well. The Membership Committee will vote on whether to grant active status to the G-MAC at its July meeting. Members of that conference for 2013-14 will be Alderson-Broaddus, Cedarville, Central State, Davis and Elkins, Kentucky Wesleyan, Ohio Valley, Salem International, Trevecca Nazarene and Ursuline.
