Joint Statement of the NCAA Board of Governors and Division I Board of Directors

During its January meetings, the NCAA Board of Governors and the Division I Board of Directors discussed the ongoing work of the Commission on College Basketball — an independent commission chaired by Condoleezza Rice. Both boards affirm that they stand ready to act on the commission’s recommendations in a timely manner and before the start of the next basketball season.

Although the commission is independent, the boards appreciate the commission members actively seeking input from the NCAA membership and others. Upon receipt and review of the commission’s report in April, the Board of Governors and the Division I Board of Directors intend to direct recommendations into the appropriate policy and legislative membership channels for immediate evaluation and implementation. This way, the boards may take final action in August.

Consistent with their strategic and leadership roles for the Association and Division I, the Board of Governors in April will set the Association-wide policy position regarding the commission’s report, with the expectation that the Division I Board of Directors specifically will take steps to act immediately. The Division I Board of Directors will direct action be taken by the Division I Council and its committee structure to develop legislation and policy necessary to implement the strategic path that the boards identify once they receive the commission’s recommendations.

These actions will strengthen the collegiate model, so the commission’s recommendations can be sustained. It is important to recognize the commission’s charge is in line with the strategic initiatives already being implemented by the Board of Governors and Division I Board of Directors to provide a pathway to opportunity for all our student-athletes.
